Fashion Designing From a Digital Perspective




The globalization in India has changed the activities in the countrys clothing industry. The fashion industry today pivots on the evolving dynamism and energy of the International design world. Creative and innovative Fashion Designers rise to become Global Brand Icons, Media Personalities, Industry Stalwarts or ultimately, Celebrated Images symbolizing the remarkable look, feel and attributes to the era. The Indian design and fashion Industry has grown consistently into big business and India has emerged as one of the leading players. Indian Culture, Traditions, Clothing , Style, Techniques and Uniqueness have influenced the world and are now influencing world fashion. With its unique fabrics, rich colour schemes and intricate handwork , India will soon become a formidable force globally. In the present millennium, the globalization of market has brought a new set of challenges to the Indian garment Industry to modernize its designing and manufacturing techniques and make itself viable and globally competitive Hence, in order to remain competitive both in global and domestic markets, the Industry must explore ways and means to upgrade overall productivity and quality as well as to develop a quick response strategy to meet the demands of the fast changing markets.

Apparel companies face significant challenges to remain competitive in todays industry, including supplying innovative collections at the right price, controlling margins, designing personalized garments, enhancing brand image, building customer loyalty and expanding business horizons. Kathiervelu (2001) reported that companies who want to compete in the fashion market can not prosper without CAD technology, much of this technology covers patterns making, marker making and textile design and production. There is a strong need towards complete computer integration from design and product development through merchandising and business operations on a worldwide network.

It is associated with creating designs for menswear, women wear, teen fashion wear and extends to accessories like jewelry, and footwear also. Fashion designing is an intellectually satisfying and lucrative profession today. As the domestic demand for ready to wear increase, and Indian garment exports growing at the phenomenal rate of 25% per annum- the future for a career in fashion Industry holds every promise of success.

Fashion industry, in this new millennium is increasing by leaps and bounds. It demands a plethora of creativity and art mixed with technical knowledge and professionalism. In recent times, information technology has emerged as a promising base for global competitiveness. CAD applications in garment manufacturing involves

  • Pattern marking and grading :-It allows to develop the pattern pieces directly on the screen, do the grading and carry out modifications in existing pattern.
  • Marker making softwares :-It allows distributing the pattern pieces in the required fabric width, which gives much better fabric conversion.
  • Designing softwares :-It enables one to select fabric, scan it, change colours, develop it , change style and print the final results.

Creativity is crucial for fashion designing. A fashion designer must have a strong aesthetic sense along with an eye for colour and details. Though an art form, fashion has also been touched by the technology wave sweeping our lives. CAD has already made inroads in to fashion designing of garments especially in export houses. By incorporating multimedia technologies, the world of fashion has changed irrevocably in the last few years to offer various options to the designers. Multimedia tools make it possible for designers to experiment, visualize and see for themselves before actually translating it to reality.
